About the Laboratory Safety and Ergonomics Online Training Course
Our Laboratory Safety and Ergonomics Training course looks at how you can prevent and avoid hazards and injuries occurring from the high physical risk that can be present when working in a lab environment.
Due to the materials involved, labs can expose workers to numerous hazards (chemical, biological, physical or radioactive). Breaches in safety protocols can lead to life threatening exposure to deadly toxins, diseases or chemicals, so good, high quality laboratory training is essential for all workers.
As lab work often involves frequent, repetitive, physical processes (often with equipment that allows only restrictive movement like fume hoods, microscopes and bench work) the potential risks, solutions and monitoring requirements in this area of work are covered in the course, along with information about how to prevent muscular, joint, postural and visual problems.
Aims of the course
The aim of this course is to inform you about good laboratory practices and safe behaviours which apply to all lab environments.
By the end of this course you will:
- understand your responsibilities for safety in the lab
- be able to identify the common hazards of lab work
- understand risk assessments and procedures
- manage waste safely
- understand basic good ergonomic principals of lab work
Who is this online training course for?
This course is for all employees who work within a laboratory environment either regularly or from time to time. The course will also benefit individuals who manage and oversee staff that undertake lab work.
Course content
1INTRODUCTION
You will begin with the course with an overview of the importance of safe working, and an introduction to the topics of legislation and risk assessment.
2GENERAL HAZARDS
In this chapter, the general hazards of lab working are looked at and the importance of keeping your workspace clean and tidy to help avoid accidents is covered.
The importance of First Aid training and protecting your health is examined next, with some basic first aid and general health instructions included (although these are not a substitute for comprehensive First Aid Training).
3CHEMICAL HAZARDS
This chapter explores the different chemical materials that you could encounter when working in a lab environment, and you will find out about the different substances, mixtures and materials that can have an adverse effect on your health.
You will learn about COSHH regulations (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) and safety data sheets, and will be show how different toxic materials can enter the body.
4CONTROLLING HAZARDS
This chapter shows you how to control hazards in a lab environment and discusses the control measures that must be in place to prevent hazards from occurring. You will learn about how you can protect yourself and others, and explore the different types of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) available to you. The chapter concludes by explaining the importance of maintaining good lab hygiene.
5MANAGING WASTE SAFELY
In this chapter, you will learn about the correct ways to dispose of the different types of waste materials.
6LABORATORY ERGONOMICS
This chapter focuses on protecting the human body and gives information about good working practice and what you can do to prevent musculoskeletal disorders.
You will take a detailed look at the different workplace environments and activities you may be involved in, the associated risk factors, and the preventative measures you should consider to avoid injury or ill health.
(The chapter covers the correct measures to take when sitting for long periods in chairs, using screens, repetitive pipetting, bench working, using microscopes, carrying out micromanipulation and working with LEV systems eg fume hoods)
7ASSESSMENT
The course concludes with a short assessment comprising of a series of questions to test your knowledge and understanding.

Q: Is the course accredited?
Most of our courses are accredited by relevant authorities / approval bodies applicable to the course such as CPD, RoSPA or IIRSM. Please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any specific standard / approval requirements.
Q: Will I get a certificate?
All courses come with a certificate of achievement in recognition of completing the course successfully. A digital record is stored with each learner’s history and certificates are available for access and download.
Q: What if I fail my course?
If you do not achieve the pass rate for the course then you will be given the opportunity to review the training content and attempt the assessment again. With some of the video based courses, the course may be locked on a third failed attempt, subject to a review by your organisation administrator of a member of the RealSense support team.
