About the LGBTQIA+ Awareness Online Training Course

The LGBTQIA+ Awareness Training course has been developed to give you the tools and skills to create a fully inclusive environment, whether in the workplace or in your local community or beyond.

While significant steps have been made, there is still work to be done to ensure full equality and protection for LGBTQIA+ individuals worldwide. More than a third of individuals still report feeling that they need to hide their sexuality at work for fear of discrimination, and two thirds of LGBTQIA+ people have experienced violence or abuse in their personal life.

Our LGBTQIA+ Awareness online training course will help you to understand how to support diversity and promote inclusivity, making sure that all learners understand and respect one another.

    Course content

    1Introduction

The opening chapter covers LGBTQIA+ history, life experiences for the LGBTQIA+ population, and LGBTQIA+ terminology.

You’ll look at what the LGBTQIA+ acronym stands for, explore some of the key points in history and find out about the growing visibility of the LGBTQIA+ community.

In this opening chapter. you’ll hear information around LGBTQIA+ life experiences and examine case studies explaining the experiences of people across the community.

    2Understanding gender and sexual orientation

Although language constantly evolves, here we explore some of the common Key LGBTQIA+ terminology covering gender and sexual orientation, with definitions and information aimed at giving you a greater insight. By the end of this chapter, you’ll understand the difference between a person’s sex and their gender identity and learn about the importance of supporting gender expression.

Sexual orientation – you’ll learn about what it means to be gay, lesbian, bi+, pansexual, omnisexual, queer, aromantic, asexual, fluid and questioning. (It is important to note that different terms may mean different things to different people).

Gender and gender identity – the gender spectrum and gender diversity are explained and you’ll explore some of the terminology used to describe gender and gender related issues.

This chapter also explains what it means to be intersex and the challenges intersex people may face.

    3LGBTQIA+ challenges

Chapter 3 explores discrimination and the law and takes a detailed look at prejudice and inappropropriate behaviour.

You’ll learn about The Equality Act (2010) and find out about direct and indirect discrimination as well as harassment and victimisation. You’ll read examples which help explain unwanted behaviour and the impact it can have.

This chapter then moves on to challenging stereotypes and common assumptions, and you’ll find out about derogatory language and trivialisation as well as the difference between bullying and ‘banter’.

    4Fostering an LGBTQIA+ environment

In this chapter, you’ll gain an understanding of the workplace challenges faced by people in the LGBTQIA+ community.

Much research has shown the business benefits of promoting LGBTQIA+ equality where everyone is accepted and valued, and this chapter will explain this in more detail.

You’ll look at the multiple ways the workplace can be made more inclusive by everybody (including by the leadership team and the rest of the workforce) and you’ll learn about the importance of using inclusive language and pronouns in communication.

    5Being an ally

Throughout this section you’ll find out what being an ally means and how you can become an ally to the LGBTQIA+ community.

An LGBTQIA+ ally is someone who supports and advocates for the rights, equality and wellbeing of individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community. You’ll learn about what this means and what allies might do.

You’ll also find out about what else you can do to actively show support and promote inclusivity.

    5Conclusion

At this stage, you’ll reflect on the information you’ve read and evaluate your knowledge and understanding of the course.
