    Course content

    1Introduction

This opening chapter introduces the core principles of equality, equity, diversity, inclusion and belonging, and explores the important role they play in creating a positive and inclusive workplace culture. You’ll learn what each of these concepts means, how they differ from one another, and why they are all essential to building workplaces where employees feel valued, respected and supported.

The chapter also examines the business benefits of equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI), including improved employee engagement, collaboration, innovation and retention. As well as exploring the positive impact of an inclusive workplace, you’ll discover the financial, legal and reputational risks organisations can face when diversity and inclusion are not prioritised.

By establishing a clear understanding of these key principles, this chapter provides the foundation for the rest of the course and helps managers understand their role in creating a workplace where everyone can thrive.

    2Law and Legislation

This chapter explores the key legislation that underpins equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in the workplace, including the Equality Act 2010 and the Worker Protection Act 2023. You will gain an understanding of protected characteristics, prohibited conduct and the legal responsibilities of both employers and employees in creating fair, safe and inclusive working environments.

Through practical examples and workplace scenarios, you’ll learn about the different types of discrimination, harassment, sexual harassment, victimisation and the duty to make reasonable adjustments. The chapter also examines vicarious liability, manager responsibilities and the potential consequences of unlawful behaviour for individuals and organisations. Learners will reinforce their knowledge through case studies and a knowledge check at the end of the chapter.

3Making a complaint of harassment or discrimination

In this chapter, managers will learn how concerns relating to discrimination, harassment and victimisation can be raised, investigated and resolved within the workplace. The chapter explores both informal and formal complaint processes, including grievances, investigations and hearings, helping you to understand how to respond appropriately when concerns are brought to your attention.

Through practical guidance and workplace scenarios, you will develop an understanding of your role in supporting employees, maintaining confidentiality, ensuring fair treatment and following organisational policies and procedures. The chapter also examines escalation routes, including Employment Tribunals, highlighting the importance of handling complaints promptly, fairly and consistently to help create a safe, respectful and inclusive workplace culture.

4Fostering an equal, diverse and inclusive workplace

This chapter focuses on the practical steps managers can take to create and maintain an inclusive workplace culture where all employees feel valued, respected and able to thrive. You will explore the role of workplace policies, training, allyship and inclusive communication in promoting equality, diversity, inclusion and belonging across your teams and organisations.

The chapter also examines stereotypes and unconscious bias, helping you to understand how assumptions can influence workplace decisions and interactions. Through real-world examples and practical guidance, managers will develop the skills needed to support diverse teams, encourage inclusion, challenge bias and foster a positive workplace culture where everyone has the opportunity to succeed. Knowledge checks throughout the chapter help reinforce key learning points and support your understanding.

    5If there is an issue

This chapter explores the role managers play when concerns relating to bullying, harassment, discrimination or victimisation are raised within the workplace. You will gain practical guidance on responding to complaints appropriately, understanding the nature of concerns and supporting employees in a fair, respectful and sensitive manner.

The chapter examines both informal and formal approaches to resolving workplace issues, including grievance procedures, investigations and the importance of following organisational policies and processes. Managers will learn how to handle concerns objectively, ensure fair treatment for all parties and contribute to a workplace culture where employees feel safe and supported when raising concerns.

    6Assessment

The final assessment consists of a series of multiple-choice questions designed to test your knowledge and understanding of the key concepts covered throughout the course. You must successfully complete the assessment to demonstrate your understanding of equality, diversity and inclusion, workplace legislation, inclusive leadership and managing workplace issues effectively.
