Sexual Harassment in the Workplace
Sexual harassment is defined as ‘behaviour characterised by the making of unwelcome and inappropriate sexual remarks or physical advances in a workplace or other professional or social situation’. In the UK, 1 in 20 adults over the age of 16 have experienced sexual harassment. It can take many forms and the law (Equality Act 2010) protects all workers from workplace sexual harassment.
The Worker Protection (Amendment of Equality Act 2010) Act 2023 is a new law that came into effect in the UK on October 26, 2024. The act updates the Equality Act 2010 and introduces new obligations for employers to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. Employers have a duty of care to protect their workers from sexual harassment and to take reasonable steps to stop it from occurring. Providing training helps ensure all staff develop an understanding of sexual harassment which is an essential step in protecting people and complying with the law.
Implementing sexual harassment awareness training helps you to recognise, understand and prevent workplace sexual harassment.

Course Content
1What is sexual harassment?
The first chapter opens by defining what sexual harassment is and you’ll take a detailed look at the different forms that it can take. You’ll explore verbal, non-verbal and physical sexual harassment, and examine a range of situations from ‘banter’ to more serious sexual harassment, discrimination and criminal behaviour.
You’ll also find out about consensual interactions and learn about how workplace culture may create pervasive sexual harassment.
2Recognising sexual harassment
Chapter two explores how to recognise sexual harassment in the workplace. It looks at identifying behaviours, and explores a range of behaviour from obvious sexual harassment to more subtle behaviours.
You’ll learn about who may be involved in committing workplace sexual harassment and who it happens to. You’ll be introduced to some real-life case studies, aimed at helping you to understand the impact sexual harassment can have.
Next, you’ll look at information and statistics to explain how often sexual harassment may happen and why. Then you’ll explore the ways you can recognise inappropriate behaviour, and look at the differences between overt and subtle forms of sexual harassment, as well as sexual harassment red flags.
To conclude this chapter, you’ll examine four case studies in detail and decide if you think they involve sexual harassment.
3Consequences of sexual harassment
In chapter three, you’ll explore the consequences of sexual harassment, including the possible mental and physical impacts on the person being harassed.
You’ll also hear about the impact on the person committing the offence, and the potential consequences for your organisation.
4Legislation, policies and procedures relating to sexual harassment
There are a number of laws which protect people from sexual harassment in the workplace, including The Equality Act 2010. In this chapter, you’ll find out how the law defines sexual harassment and who the law applies to, and you’ll read examples of less favourable treatment. Case studies are once again included to help you to understand how employees are protected under The Equality Act.
Next, you’ll move on to exploring The Worker Protection Act (2023) which is an amendment to The Equality Act (2010) and provides better protection for employees from sexual harassment.
This chapter then looks at the responsibilities of the employer, and explains the situations where an employer may be liable for acts of harassment
Later in the chapter, workplace policies are explained, and you’ll be given information about your workplace anti-harassment policy and what it should contain. You’ll then find out about how to report sexual harassment and what the barriers to reporting may include.
You’ll learn about how to make a complaint, what this involves and what the next steps may be if the problem is not resolved.
The chapter concludes by explaining what should happen when a criminal offence has taken place. You’ll also take a brief look at the process of whistleblowing.
5Preventing sexual harassment
The course closes with an important chapter about preventing workplace sexual harassment, and explains the steps employers must take to help prohibit sexual harassment from happening in their organisation.
You’ll learn about the role all employees can play in preventing workplace sexual harassment and the importance of avoiding the ‘bystander mentality’.
The chapter concludes by reemphasising what you must do and the steps to take if you witness sexual harassment at work
6Assessment
There is a short assessment at the end of the course. You will need to complete this with at least an 80% pass rate to successfully complete the course.
