The Infection Prevention and Control Training Course is suitable for anyone who works with people in a care setting. This could include (but is not limited to) those in hospitals, residential settings or those people who visit patient’s home to provide care for them there.
Course content
1INFECTION AND RISKS
The course begins by exploring what constitutes infection and the common infections that may occur in care settings.
Covid-19 is specifically looked at, along with general information about how infection spreads and how to prevent this from happening.
2IMPORTANCE OF HYGIENE
This section covers the ways infection can be prevented, breaking the chain of infection and the standard precautions that those working with people in care should take.
3GOOD HYGIENE
Within this section, learners will find out about the ‘five important moments when you should clean your hands’, how to wash your hands properly and when you should and shouldn’t use hand sanitiser.
4MANAGING THE ENVIRONMENT
This section looks at the responsibilities workers have to prevent the spread of infection within the workplace. Cleaning policies are focused on with emphasis given to the care environment and care equipment. Learners will find out about dealing with spillages of blood and bodily fluids and the use of a spill kit. This section concludes with information about dealing linen and laundry, including handling these items when a patient has Covid-19.
5DISPOSAL OF WASTE
Here, learners will explore the ways to deal with clinical waste as well as the correct procedure to follow when using sharps.
6PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT
The chapter on Personal Protective Equipment explains everything that learners need to know regarding PPE and what it is, with information about the main types of PPE. There is detailed guidance on how to put on and take off PPE, with videos for users to watch that give step by step instructions. Users will learn about when they must use PPE, with situation-specific examples.
7PREVENTING THE SPREAD OF INFECTION
This section covers the steps to take to prevent the spread of infection, including Covid-19 and concludes with general information and guidance.
8ASSESSMENT
A multiple choice assessment where learners answer questions to check their knowledge. A 70% score is required to pass the course and a certificate is available upon completion.

Q: Will I get a certificate?
All courses come with a certificate of achievement in recognition of completing the course successfully. A digital record is stored with each learner’s history and certificates are available for access and download.
Q: What if I fail my course?
If you do not achieve the pass rate for the course then you will be given the opportunity to review the training content and attempt the assessment again. With some of the video based courses, the course may be locked on a third failed attempt, subject to a review by your organisation administrator of a member of the RealSense support team.
