1INTRODUCTION
The course begins by introducing you to ADHD, and looks at what it is and who it can affect. Gender differences in children are explored.
The 3 main types of ADHD (predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive and a combination of both) are covered in more detail and the characteristics of each type are examined, as well as the difficulty around diagnosis.
You will find out about ADHD in a school environment – how symptoms can affect learning and how to manage this in the classroom. Co-morbidity with other conditions is also explored.
The topic of ADHD in adults is also introduced, and you’ll receive information about facts and figures, symptoms and severity, the differences to ADHD in children and how it can affect day to day life.
2CAUSES AND DIAGNOSIS OF ADHD
In this chapter you will learn about the role of genetics in ADHD and the ongoing research that medical specialists are still carrying out. Brain function and structure are looked at and you will be shown the differences that may be observed in people with ADHD.
Other factors that may affect the occurrence of ADHD are then explored to help you understand some of the reasons an individual may experience ADHD. The chapter also explains the differences between typical developmental behaviour and ADHD, and the importance of understanding the difference between these.
Getting help – you will hear about the specialists who can help with parental concerns and the processes and formal assessments that must be undertaken before ADHD can be diagnosed, as well as the criteria that must be adhered to.
Tips and Advice for Parents and Carers are included in this chapter – these are useful for you to make a note of for future reference.
Finally, you will hear about how adults may be diagnosed with ADHD, and the differences in diagnoses between adults and children.
