You will hear about how the condition is diagnosed, and the different ways it can be treated and managed. Practical advice is also given for supporting children, teeangers and adults with ADHD.

Aims of the course

This course aims to give you a thorough understanding of ADHD, including what it is, who it can affect and how it can be treated and managed. The course mixes medical data and information with useful hints and tips to give you an full overview of the condition, and enable you to better support those individuals with ADHD that you work with or care for.

Who is this online training course for?

This course is useful for anyone who works with, or has regular contact with, children or adults with ADHD.

It’s thought that between 2% and 5% of school age children in the UK have ADHD, so this course will particularly help to support those who work with or care for those individuals.

Course content

The course begins by introducing you to ADHD, and looks at what it is and who it can affect. Gender differences in children are explored.

The 3 main types of ADHD (predominantly inattentive, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive and a combination of both) are covered in more detail and the characteristics of each type are examined, as well as the difficulty around diagnosis.

You will find out about ADHD in a school environment – how symptoms can affect learning and how to manage this in the classroom. Co-morbidity with other conditions is also explored.

The topic of ADHD in adults is also introduced, and you’ll receive information about facts and figures, symptoms and severity, the differences to ADHD in children and how it can affect day to day life.

In this chapter you will learn about the role of genetics in ADHD and the ongoing research that medical specialists are still carrying out. Brain function and structure are looked at and you will be shown the differences that may be observed in people with ADHD.

Other factors that may affect the occurrence of ADHD are then explored to help you understand some of the reasons an individual may experience ADHD. The chapter also explains the differences between typical developmental behaviour and ADHD, and the importance of understanding the difference between these.

Getting help – you will hear about the specialists who can help with parental concerns and the processes and formal assessments that must be undertaken before ADHD can be diagnosed, as well as the criteria that must be adhered to.

Tips and Advice for Parents and Carers are included in this chapter –  these are useful for you to make a note of for future reference.

Finally, you will hear about how adults may be diagnosed with ADHD, and the differences in diagnoses between adults and children.

In this chapter, the variety of treatments available to children, young people and adults is explored. These include:

Therapies – the main therapies used to treat ADHD are discussed and you will find out about how they work and what the benefits can be.

Diet and Supplements – the benefits of a healthy, balanced diet are explained and you will hear about about how different foods and supplements can affect ADHD.

Medicines – you will learn about the 5 main medications that are licensed to help manage ADHD and the ways in which they can offer support to users.

Natural Remedies – this section covers the importance of a balanced diet, exercise, sleep, limiting screen time, tai chi, yoga and spending time outdoors, meditation and mindfulness.

The chapter concludes by examining the links between depression and ADHD and the importance of managing and treating both conditions.

In this chapter, you will learn about the lifestyle changes that can be made by those with ADHD to help manage the symptoms of their condition.

Children – you will examine the different situations where adult support can help children to better manage their ADHD, and the benefits of implementing an incentive scheme. Details are given about practical support that you can offer to children, including giving clear instructions and setting consequences.

Eating, exercise, sleep and social situations are all covered, with lots of helpful hints and tips for parents and carers. You will also hear information about limiting screen time and coping with interrupted sleep patterns.

Teenagers – the importance of sleep and sleep hygiene is explored, alongside the benefits of increasing exercise and limiting caffeine intake. The importance of additional support and help in the school environment is also looked at.

Adults – for adults, symptom management focuses on useful advice about planning and organising your day, the benefits of exercise, how to relax, and the benefits of joining a support group.

This online course is assessed at the end of each chapter. You will be required to answer a series of multiple choice questions in order to move on to the next section of the course.
