About the Drug and Alcohol Awareness Training for Managers Online Course

Drug and Alcohol Awareness for Managers is a digital training course, designed to support people who manage staff and make sure you can recognise the signs and symptoms of substance abuse, and the impacts it may have on individuals and the workplace.

Through undertaking this training, you will understand the law and legislation that protects the health and safety of employees, and be able to manage incidents relating to drugs and alcohol within a supportive culture.

    Aims of the course

Our Drug and Alcohol Awareness for Managers training course aims to raise awareness about the impact substance misuse can have on individuals and the workplace. It provides preventative strategies and suggests effective ways to identify and minimise the risks, promoting positive health and wellbeing outcomes for all employees.

Who is this online training course for?

This course is appropriate for anyone who manages or oversees staff who wants a better awareness of the impact of drug and alcohol misuse on employees, their colleagues, and the workplace as a whole.

The course is suitable for you if you are responsible for implementing strategies for dealing with substance misuse or involved in overseeing employee health and wellbeing.

    Course content

    1Introduction

You’ll begin the course by looking at the many different reasons why people may use drugs (both legal and illegal), and the definitions of drug abuse.

The impacts of drug and alcohol misuse in different contexts are then explored – including the impact on the workplace, the impact on health, and the impact on society. Recent statistics are provided so you can relate your training to real life situations.

You will be asked to reflect on the importance of understanding and addressing drug and alcohol misuse in the context of the workplace, and to consider how the workplace can provide opportunities for support.

    2Understanding Types of Drug

The main three categories of drugs and their effects are explored in this chapter (depressants, hallucinogens, stimulants) with detailed information and examples of the key effects of these drugs, and their risks to mental and physical health given in each section.

You’ll also be shown information about polydrug use and the additional risks that may occur when drugs are combined.

The more commonplace drugs such as alcohol, smoking, caffeine and image and performance enhancing drugs are also covered in this chapter.

3The Law and Your Legal Responsibilities

This chapter look at the legislation associated with drugs and alcohol and how it affects the workplace. The laws relating to alcohol, drugs and smoking (for you and the place you work) are covered in detail, with information about units of alcohol and drink-driving limits explored.

Real life case studies are included in this chapter to help you reflect on the implications of alcohol and drug use on the workplace, and how they affect people’s their ability to do their job.

    4Mitigating the Issue

Chapter 4 examines Drug and Alcohol policies, why these are important and what they should include, with an emphasis on building a positive corporate culture.

You’ll explore the importance of risk assessments and study two comprehensive case studies demonstrating how to implement and use risk assessments.

Strategies for raising drug and alcohol awareness in the workplace are covered in this chapter and you’ll be asked to consider how your organisation promotes health and wellbeing.

Finally, you’ll look at different strategies for promoting health and wellbeing to help employees understand the health risks of substance misuse and encourage behaviour change.

    5Identifying a Problem

You’ll find out about using personnel audits to help find the links between possible instances of substance misuse and explore strategies for implementing these and recording your findings.

This chapter then explains the possible signs to look out for when identifying an issue and looks at what you should do next.

The rationale, safeguards and procedures around drug testing at work are examined, and some of the complexities around this process are highlighted, including both employer responsibilities and employee rights.

    6Managing an Issue

This chapter gives you the information you need to help identify potential issues and signpost employees to support.

The emphasis for line managers is to manage the problem with support and understanding (although legal requirements are taken into consideration) and a model of ‘The Cycle of Change’ is incorporated into this chapter to help you to understand the different stages an employee might be at, and what this can mean for you as their manager.

The chapter concludes with some informative Tips for Communication for Line Managers (verbal, non-verbal and environmental) which will help you to talk to your employees in a supportive but professional way.

    7Assessment

The course concludes with a short assessment comprising of a series of questions to test your knowledge and understanding of the course. In order to obtain your Certificate of Completion, you must pass this assessment.
