- appreciate common mental health issues and how widespread they are
- recognise that your mental health can change throughout your life and that there should be no stigma attached to mental health issues
- appreciate the connection between physical and mental wellbeing
- understand mental health strategies
- know how to confidently talk to someone about mental health issues

The course is suitable for everyone, particularly those who wish to increase their own awareness of how to support and care for their mental health.
The course would also benefit anyone who employs staff and wants to understand how to help and support them as a part of their ‘duty of care’ under the Health and Safety Act. It is also a useful educational tool for employers to provide to their employees as part of their health and wellbeing training.
Course content
1Introduction
The course begins by exploring definitions of mental health and the historic and current stigma around this topic. You’ll find out about the link between physical health and mental health, and understand why employers should care about this issue. To open the course, you’ll be asked to reflect on your own thoughts about mental health.
2Understanding Mental Health
This chapter introduces a simple model of the mind to help you understand how mental health works and explains the causes and factors of mental health.
The Mental Health Continuum is then explained including the common symptoms of various mental health conditions and the actions to take at each stage.
You’ll look at some mental health case studies to help you understand the cause and effect of real life situations, the relationship between physical and mental health, and the factors that may lead to mental health concerns.
3Common Mental Health Issues
There are many hundreds of mental health disorders. This chapter explores some of the more common ones and focuses specifically on the signs and symptoms of:
- depression
- anxiety
- stress (including stress in the workplace)
- burnout
- addiction
4Supporting Mental Health
Here, you’ll find out about how to monitor your mental health and explore self awareness and changes to look out for – behavioural, emotional, bodily and psychological changes.
You’ll find out about some good habits for improving and maintaining mental health relating to body, mind and spirit. You’ll learn about improving sleep health as well as exploring the link between exercise and good mental health, and the benefits of good nutrition.
The chapter includes an interactive section to help challenge negative thoughts and guides you through different scenarios to help you to understand the technique.
You’ll also look at building resilience and the chapter includes ‘Tips to help you Manage Worry’ and ‘Tips for Maintaining a Healthy Work/Life Balance.
Later in the chapter, you’ll find out about primary emotions and how understanding and managing emotions is key to good mental health. This section also includes examples of useful breathing exercises.
This chapter concludes with a number of ‘Tips for Building Resilience’.
5Reflection
To complete this course, you’ll undertake a reflection based on the information you have read to help you consolidate your learning.

Upon successful completion, a certificate of achievement is available and or automatically added to a learner’s digital record.

A certificate includes the learner’s name, course title, completion score / result, completion date and any marks of approval, accreditation authorities, and or distribution partners. It can be downloaded, stored or printed.

Q: Is the course accredited?
Most of our courses are accredited by relevant authorities / approval bodies applicable to the course such as CPD, RoSPA or IIRSM. Please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any specific standard / approval requirements.
Q: Will I get a certificate?
All courses come with a certificate of achievement in recognition of completing the course successfully. A digital record is stored with each learner’s history and certificates are available for access and download.
Q: What if I fail my course?
If you do not achieve the pass rate for the course then you will be given the opportunity to review the training content and attempt the assessment again. With some of the video based courses, the course may be locked on a third failed attempt, subject to a review by your organisation administrator of a member of the RealSense support team.
