Menopause Awareness Training

This Menopause Awareness Training provides the support you need to break down taboos and create a menopause inclusive workforce – it is a game changer.

Menopausal women are the fastest growing workplace demographic, with 4.4 million women aged 40 – 64 in the workplace. 6 out of 10 menopausal women say their symptoms have had a negative impact on their work, and 9 out of 10 women currently say that they feel unable to talk to their manager about their menopause.

It’s not just transition symptoms themselves which can make work more difficult to handle. Evidence suggests that managers and colleagues’ attitudes to women experiencing the menopause play a significant role, which is why everyone in the workplace needs to understand the menopause, and help promote a healthy and supportive working environment.

In this course, individuals experiencing menopause are referred to as ‘women’. However, we recognise that menopause affects all those with a menstrual cycle, including non-binary, intersex, and trans individuals. We strive to avoid generalisations and to respect everyone’s unique experiences.

  • Developed with menopause specialists
  • Includes relevant, real-life, modern case studies

About the Menopause Awareness Online Training Course

There are currently approximately 13 million UK women who are perimenopausal or menopausal, equivalent to almost one third of the UK female population. More women than ever – 8 out of 10 menopausal women – will be working into and beyond menopause.

Unlike pregnancy or maternity, the menopause is not well understood or provided for in workplace cultures, policies, or training.

Many women are unaware of and unprepared for menopause, and may experience debilitating symptoms. Raising awareness through education to normalise what has been a taboo subject, is crucial to create an inclusive workplace.

Aims of the course

The aim of the Menopause Awareness Course is to give you a comprehensive understanding of the menopause in the context of the workplace.

By the end of this course you will:

  • Know what the menopause is and be informed about who it can affect
  • Understand how menopause can have physical, psychological, and cognitive symptoms
  • Be able to offer support to colleagues, partners, friends, and family
  • Know how menopause symptoms can affect individuals in the workplace, and understand adjustments that can be made
  • Recognise how to promote a healthy and supportive working environment to those experiencing menopause

Who is this online training course for?

The Menopause Awareness Course is for all employers and employees. It is important that all individuals in the workplace understand the process of menopause, as everyone will know someone that it may affect – colleagues, partners, family, or friends. The course will enable workplaces to promote a healthy and supportive working environment for all employees.

Course content

1Introduction

As an introduction to the course, you’ll look at why we need to talk about the menopause and hear about recent examples of menopause in the news. You’ll be shown menopause statistics, and understand why it is so important for women – and their partners – to understand what is happening. Menopause and the Law is reflected upon in this opening chapter.

2Understanding the Menopause

This chapter explores:

What is the menopause – menopause is defined and explained in simple and easy to understand terms.

The stages of menopause – you’ll learn about perimenopause, menopause and post-menopause.

Types of menopause – natural menopause, induced menopause and premature menopause are all discussed.

Menopause and the LGBTQ+ community – a summary of the people who may experience menopause symptoms

Symptoms of menopause – an in-depth section covering the multiple psychological, physical, and cognitive symptoms that may be experienced during perimenopause and menopause.

3Menopause and the Workplace

You’ll be shown menopause workplace statistics, and gain an understanding of the impact of menopause on the workplace. You’ll explore how menopause symptoms can affect your ability to carry out day to day tasks and the outcomes that this can have for productivity and ability to work.

In this section, you’ll also look at how the workplace can impact the symptoms of menopause, and what adjustments can be made to support menopausal workers.

The importance of a supportive workplace environment is highlighted, and you’ll find out about the steps that can be taken to ensure that all workplaces better support menopause.

4Starting the Menopause Conversation

This chapter explains the difficulties that may arise with discussing menopause in the workplace, and looks at why both employees and employers may previously have struggled to address menopause problems.

You’ll learn about the importance of sharing your experience with colleagues and line managers, and find out how to approach sensitive conversations.

5Support and Advice

In this detailed chapter you’ll find out about what you can do to support others (colleagues, partners, family and friends) who may be experiencing menopause, and we provide lots of hints and tips for you to try.

We take an in-depth look at the ways you can support yourself:

Self-care – here we explore smoking, diet, sleep, exercise, mindfulness

Medical support – we explain the role of HRT and other non-hormonal medical treatments

Alternative therapies – information about Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), herbal treatments, and alternatives such as acupuncture and yoga.

6Reflection

To conclude the course, you’ll reflect on your new knowledge about the importance of understanding menopause in the context of the workplace, and answer some true or false questions.
