    Our  Fire Safety Awareness for Schools and Colleges e-learning course was developed in conjunction with fire safety and compliance experts to provide tailored training to those working in any buildings within the education sector.

    Aims of the course

    The Fire Safety Awareness Training for Schools and Colleges will provide you with an awareness of fire regulations and what to do in the event of a fire and will educate you about how to safely reduce the risk to life within your educational setting.

    The course will ensure that you understand how fires can start and that you know how to identify fire hazards and risks, whilst also appreciating the importance of carrying out good housekeeping processes.

    The course aims to ensure that all learners are able to understand signage, classifications of fire and fire fighting equipment, and are given the knowledge of when and how to tackle a fire (if safe and appropriate to do so).

    This course is suitable for all staff who work in schools and colleges including (but not limited to) teaching staff, maintenance, office and catering staff and any other other employees who may require a knowledge of fire safety procedures.

     

    Course content

    1INTRODUCTION

    This section covers information about the impact of fires in schools and colleges and explains the importance of Fire Policies and Procedures.

    Information is given about the key roles and responsibilities of staff relating to preventing fires in schools, including the Building Safety Manager and the Fire Marshal or Warden. Details are given about the information a School or College Fire Policy could contain.

    Advice for Teaching and non-Teaching Staff regarding their role in preventing and responding to fires is covered here, as well as general information about the role every individual must play in school and college fire safety.

    2UNDERSTANDING FIRE

    This chapter covers:

    The Chemistry of Fire – the components required for fires to start, the Triangle of Combustion,

    How Fires Start – sources of ignition, how smoke and fire spread, conduction, convection and radiation, common examples of causes of fire, preventing arson.

    Identifying Risks and Hazards – a real life classroom example is given and users are asked to identify the potential fire risks and hazards.

    Housekeeping, Storage and Waste Disposal – the correct storage of combustible waste, managing waste.

    Natural, Physical and Human Reactions – human factors that can influence decision making.

    Knowledge Test and Summary – to move on from this chapter, a brief multiple choice assessment is undertaken.

     

    3FIRE ACTION

    What to Do on Discovering a Fire – your safety as a priority, correct interpretation of a fire incident, identifying the level of risk (including what to do if the risk is unclear).

    Raising the Alarm – how to raise the alarm, types of alarms, useful tips, common reasons why people hesitate to raise the alarm, impacts of when the alarm is raised,

    On Hearing the Alarm – the evacuation process, the role of human factors.

    Tackling a Fire if Safe to Do So – human factors, types of extinguisher, severity of the fire.

    Knowledge Test and Summary – to move on from this chapter, a brief multiple choice assessment is undertaken.

     

    4EVACUATION

    Effective Use of Time – common factors determining the length of time taken to complete an evacuation, including human factors.

    Location of Escape Routes – using escape routes, the importance of knowing escape routes and assembly points.

    Fire Doors and Means of Escape – types of fire doors and their operating mechanisms, essential information about fire exits.

    Reasons for Not Using Lifts – smokes and toxic fumes, electricity.

    PEEPS and Additional Procedures – procedures for persons requiring assistance, who may need specific consideration.

    Fire Drills – additional information regarding Fire Evacuation Drills during Covid 19, testing evacuation procedures, making fire drills realistic.

    Knowledge Test and Summary – to move on from this chapter, a brief multiple choice assessment is undertaken.

     

    5FIRE FIGHTING EQUIPMENT

    Overview – important information about fire fighting equipment and its use.

    Classification of Fires – information about the different classes of fire, from A to F.

    Types of Extinguishers – details about each type of extinguisher – Carbon Dioxide, Water, Powder, Foam and Wet Chemical.

    Using an Extinguisher – information about unlocking an extinguisher and the operating techniques you may need.

    Fire Blankets – details about the main uses of fire blankets.

    Knowledge Test and Summary – to move on from this chapter, a brief multiple choice assessment is undertaken.

     

    6ASSESSMENT

    A short assessment comprising multiple choice questions, aimed at testing your knowledge and understanding of the course. Certificate available upon completion.

    How is it delivered?

    Modules are delivered via our online learning platform, Activbase or available in alternative formats for use on a customer’s own Learning Management System (LMS). Once payment has been received, you will be sent an email from RealSense confirming your purchase followed by a separate email from our Activbase Learning Platform with details on how to access your course(s). Access is available 24/7 for the duration of your license. Customers requiring a different course format e.g. SCORM for use on their own LMS, please contact us with your requirements.

    Fire Safety Awareness Training for Schools and Colleges

    Upon successful completion, a certificate of achievement is available and or automatically added to a learner’s digital record. 

    Digital certificate(s) – print, download, store

    A certificate includes the learner’s name, course title, completion score / result, completion date and any marks of approval, accreditation authorities, and or distribution partners. It can be downloaded, stored or printed.

    Records and certificates - Is the course accredited? What if i fail? Can I download my certificate?

    Q: Is the course accredited?

    Most of our courses are accredited by relevant authorities / approval bodies applicable to the course such as CPD, RoSPA or IIRSM. Please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any specific standard / approval requirements.

    Q: Will I get a certificate?

    All courses come with a certificate of achievement in recognition of completing the course successfully. A digital record is stored with each learner’s history and certificates are available for access and download.

    Q: What if I fail my course?

    If you do not achieve the pass rate for the course then you will be given the opportunity to review the training content and attempt the assessment again. With some of the video based courses, the course may be locked on a third failed attempt, subject to a review by your organisation administrator of a member of the RealSense support team.
