    About the Leadership Skills Training course

    This Leadership Skills Training course introduces the basics of leadership and explores where the concept originated from.

    A leader doesn’t necessarily have to be a ‘manager’, but it’s difficult to see how a manager could be truly effective without having at least some leadership skills.

    The course will explain various leadership theories, including situational leadership, contingency theories, transactional and transformational leadership and more. Then you’ll find out about developing teams and supporting team members by looking at the role leaders play in this. The final two chapters look at the role communication plays in effective leadership, and the course finishes off by explaining how leaders can ensure their teams move forward together to achieve a shared vision.

    Course content

    1 Leadership and Management

    The course begins by explaining the differences between leadership and management, and encourages you to recognise that not all leaders are managers. It explains the different styles and techniques effective leaders and managers use and looks at the ways in which management style and leadership style are both different and similar.

    Some management and leadership theory is introduced to help you to understand the psychology of both.

    This opening chapter aims to get you thinking about what management and leadership actually involve, and helps you to begin to analyse your own style.

     

    2 Leadership Theories

    This chapter looks at how people’s views of what makes a good leader have changed over the last 100 years. It looks at the effect of changes in society, technology, the economy and politics, and how these all influence our definition of a good leader. It explains the different theories of Leadership that have evolved over the years to help you understand some of the best ways to lead.

    These include:

    • Great Man Theory & Trait Theory
    • Behaviourist Theory (‘Produce or Perish’, Country-Club Leadership)
    • Situational Theory (The Behavioural Style Continuum and choosing the correct behavioural response depending on the situation)
    • Interactions and Contingency Theories
    • Transformational Leadership (including Toxic Leadership)
    • Nearby Leadership – current day theory, focuses on reciprocity.

    The chapter concludes by looking at a recent CIPD findings about being an effective leader and explains the characteristics that they believe will help you lead effectively.

     

    3 Team Development and Leadership

    This chapter looks at how teams develop and what you can do to help your team work with shared goals and aspirations. You’ll explore ‘What is a Team?’  and using a football team as an example you’ll find out how teams share responsibility for successes and failures.

    This chapter takes an in-depth look at Dr Bruce Tuckman’s 1965 theory around the Stages of a Team and explains each stage in detail. The stages include:

    • Forming
    • Storming
    • Norming
    • Performing
    • Dorming
    • Adjourning

     

    4 Individuals Within Teams

    The course moves on to looking at information to help you as a leader to provide better support and engage the individuals within your team.

    Here, you’ll look at different individuals within teams, using the Belbin Team Role Profiles model. Each of them have ‘allowable weaknesses’ – the price you pay for their positive contribution to your team.

    There are 9 characters that you’ll learn about: Team Workers, Resource Investigators, Co-ordinators, Innovators, Monitors, Specialists, Implementors, Completer/Finishers and Shapers, and you’ll be asked to consider who the members of your team are most like, and how these roles are interchangeable. You’ll also discover how to best manage each of these characters and the traits they may display that can cause problems.

     

     

    5 Communicating One-to-One with Individuals

    This chapter shares ideas that can help you to improve your one-to-one communication with the individuals within your team.

    Communication is a two-way street – as a leader how should you present information in a way that increased the chances of another person understanding it? This chapter will give you in-depth knowledge about communication and feedback. Many people lack confidence in giving feedback and by the end of this chapter, you should feel a lot more confident.

    You’ll find out about the do’s and don’t of giving positive feedback, how to successfully deliver negative feedback, and how to manage planned feedback situations such as appraisals. You’ll learn about the practical tool of the FRANK method and how to put this into practice during your working day.

     

     

    6 Moving Forward Together

    This chapter considers how leaders and managers can deliver a vision for the future that responds to the needs of their team. You’ll learn about techniques for collaborating on a shared vision, and how to make sure your team feel involved. You’ll also explore what a vision is and how this is different from a goal, and look at simple techniques to help your team work on collaborations together.

    Next, you’ll explore goal-setting with your team. Setting effective goals is a key leadership and managerial skill so this important section will show you the key factors involved in goal setting. You’ll look at how to use and implement SMART techniques for goal-setting.

    The course concludes with a summary about being the best leader you can be and encourages you to now put the tools you have learned into practice.

    How is it delivered?

    Modules are delivered via our online learning platform, Activbase or available in alternative formats for use on a customer’s own Learning Management System (LMS). Once payment has been received, you will be sent an email from RealSense confirming your purchase followed by a separate email from our Activbase Learning Platform with details on how to access your course(s). Access is available 24/7 for the duration of your license. Customers requiring a different course format e.g. SCORM for use on their own LMS, please contact us with your requirements.

    Upon successful completion, a certificate of achievement is available and or automatically added to a learner’s digital record. 

    Digital certificate(s) – print, download, store

    A certificate includes the learner’s name, course title, completion score / result, completion date and any marks of approval, accreditation authorities, and or distribution partners. It can be downloaded, stored or printed.

Records contain details of sessions including progress, attempts and results.     Records and certificates - Is the course accredited? What if i fail? Can I download my certificate?

    Q: Is the course accredited?

    Most of our courses are accredited by relevant authorities / approval bodies applicable to the course such as CPD, RoSPA or IIRSM. Please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any specific standard / approval requirements.

    Q: Will I get a certificate?

    All courses come with a certificate of achievement in recognition of completing the course successfully. A digital record is stored with each learner’s history and certificates are available for access and download.

    Q: What if I fail my course?

    If you do not achieve the pass rate for the course then you will be given the opportunity to review the training content and attempt the assessment again. With some of the video based courses, the course may be locked on a third failed attempt, subject to a review by your organisation administrator of a member of the RealSense support team.
