About the Paediatric First Aid Training course
This Paediatric First Aid Training covers a multitude of skill sets and responses to many medical situations. The course will give you the skills to provide immediate medical care and treatment that will either resolve the situation (in less serious ‘everyday’ cases) or provide an essential short-term emergency stop-gap until professional medical assistance is in place.
To successfully pass this course, you must complete a short multiple choice assessment at the end of each chapter before moving on to the next chapter.

Who is this online training course for?
Paediatric First Aid is a skill that would be useful for anyone that works with children and infants. This includes those working in nursery, school and pre-school environments, as well as professional childminders, club leaders and sports coaches amongst others.
Course content
It is recommended that you work through the modules in order as this provides a logical progression to your learning. The content can be reviewed as many times as you need and you can pause and pick up from the end of the last completed module as often as required.
1 Introduction to Paediatric First Aid
The course begins by examining what first aid is, its’ objectives and the implications these will have for children and infants. The roles and responsibilities of first aiders are explored.
Paediatric First Aid covers a wide range of situations, so is relevant for all those responsible for paediatric welfare and childcare, and the introduction highlights some important points you need to remember during this training.
2 Planning and Preparation
This chapter explores how a first aider should respond to situations where a child or infant has suffered injury, illness or other medical setbacks.
You will find out about the planning and preparation first aiders need to undertake as a part of their training and how to ensure you’re prepared and equipped for potential situations before they arise.
The chapter explores the Written Plan of Action which outlines what your emergency response should be, and helps you to understand the information this document should include.
The importance of managing emotions in an emergency situation is emphasised.
3 Essential First Aid Knowledge and Skills
In this chapter you will learn about how you should behave and the initial actions you should take upon arriving at the scene of a first aid situation.
The DRSABC method is explained in detail to give you the skills you need to assess a situation.
You will also be shown The Responsiveness Spectrum (AVPU) which can be used to help you to monitor the response of a casualty.
Detailed information about airways is covered and the ‘Look, Listen, Feel’ exercise is explained. You will be shown how to administer CPR and the Recovery Position is demonstrated.
4 Basic Life Support
This chapter will teach you about Basic Life Support (BLS) and resuscitation guidelines.
‘ABC’ (Airway, Breathing, Circulation) is covered in detail here in the context of basic life support, including how to open the airway, checking for normal breathing, dealing with an unconscious child, administering rescue breaths and CPR, and calling the emergency services.
Basic life support for infants and babies is covered separately here due to their smaller size and vulnerabilities.
This chapter includes information about the UK Resuscitation Council Guidelines including an explanation of the effectiveness of CPR.
You will be introduced to Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) and be shown a demonstration and explanation of how these can be used.
5 Fractures and Head Injuries
Within this chapter you will look at all types of fractures including skull and head injuries, concussion and compression.
You will be shown what to look out for when assessing for a suspected fracture and be shown how to treat the child.
You’ll receive detailed training about skull fractures, spinal injuries and head injuries and the importance of managing these correctly is explained. You will hear about the signs and symptoms to look for and the steps you must take – including the actions you must avoid.
6 Shock, Bleeding and Dressing Wounds
In the section about shock, you will learn about the possible causes of shock, the symptoms you may observe, and the treatments you can administer.
You will explore electric shock and anaphylactic shock, how these may occur and the ways they can be dealt with. (Epipens are covered in this section).
You will find out about how best to treat injuries that result in bleeding (internal or external) in children and infants, and how to dress wounds.
7 Specific Medical Conditions
Some of the more common conditions that a first aider may be able to assist with are covered in this chapter. You will find out about how your help can be invaluable when caring for a child with pre-existing health conditions.
You’ll look in detail at asthma and diabetes in children, the way these conditions are managed, and how they may cause a medical emergency.
Seizures and fits are covered in this section, and you’ll hear about the range of symptoms a child may display when having a seizure or fit. You’ll learn about how to manage a child having a possible seizure and the steps you should take to act in the child’s best interests. (The ACTION acronym is looked at here – Assess, Cushion, Time, Identify, Over, Never).
Febrile convulsions are also explored in this chapter, including their possible symptoms and the actions you should take if a child in your care has a febrile seizure.
Meningitis in children is covered so you will have an understanding of the condition, know the common symptoms you should be aware of, and appreciate the additional vulnerabilities of children and infants to meningitis.
8 Minor Injuries
This comprehensive chapter explores the minor injuries and mishaps children may encounter and the importance of first aid for these everyday occurrences.
The treatment of minor injuries including bruising, cuts and grazes, splinters, nosebleeds, bites and stings (including ticks, fleas, lice and lyme disease) are covered here and you will be reminded that although minor, some of these instances can progress to become more serious.
Poison is covered and you’ll hear about the different ways poisoning may be treated and how this can be life-threatening to children.
Eye Injuries are explored, with information about eye irrigation procedures explained.
Finally, Burns and Scalds are explained as these can be relatively common in children and infants. The different treatment methods are given and you’ll hear about the care you need to take when dealing with burns.
9 First Aid Documentation and First Aid Kits
This chapter aims to provide you the information you need to create a formal written framework that will document the emergency response you will take for the children in your care. Here, you’ll learn about:
- Emergency Plans of Action
- Medical Records
- Medication Authorisation Forms
- Medication Reference Sheets
Information about First Aid Kits and their contents, storage and maintenance are also covered in this chapter.
This course includes a downloadable Emergency Response Plan document that you can save and use for future reference to help you to detail your first aid procedural response.
