About the Intersex Awareness Online Training Course
In this course we will look more closely at intersex variations.
In the following sections you can learn what we mean by intersex, learn about intersex history and culture and the lived experience of intersex people today.

The aim of the course is to improve your understanding of what it means to be intersex and to understand how to support and advocate for intersex people.

This course is for anyone who wishes to become an ally to the intersex community and improve their knowledge and understanding.
Course content
1What is intersex?
Intersex is a general term that refers to individuals who are born with physical or genetic variations that do not fit typical or societal definitions of male or female. These variations can include differences in reproductive or sexual anatomy, hormones or chromosomes.
This section explains and explores some of the more common intersex traits and conditions and explains individuality. We also take a look at intersex as a part of the LGBTQIA+ community.
2Intersex Terminology
Intersex people use many different terms to describe themselves, their bodies, sex characteristics and identities.
This section looks at some of the terminology that you may hear used and provides you with a deeper explanation of interphobia, VSC, CAMAB, CAFAB, intergender, endo sex and legal sex.
3Intersex history and intersex today
Recorded recognition of sex as a spectrum goes as far back as Aristotle and Hippocrates. This section looks at intersex people throughout history and the ways in which terminology has changed throughout the years. We look at the challenging of medical interventions as well as the increased visibility of intersex people, and the recognition of intersex rights and concerns.
Support and advocacy groups are included in this section as well as information about intersex awareness days, symbols, campaigners and activists.
4Challenges
Many of the challenges faced by intersex people are rooted in society’s expectations that everybody will fit within one of two biological sexes – male and female – and that physically they will reflect our physical expectations of those two sexes.
In this section we explore some of the challenges faced by intersex people including legal recognition and protection, intersex human rights violations, international collaboration, stigma and discrimination, intersex erasure and lack of awareness.
5Common misconceptions
Traditionally, in our culture and society, we have had a very binary conception of biological sex – that people are male or female, and that everyone’s biological and genetic characteristics fit into one of these two categories.
This chapter challenges some of the common misconceptions people may hold about intersex people and answers common questions with factual information, statistics and evidence.
Furthering education and awareness about people who are intersex is crucial in breaking down the stereotypes and misunderstandings which can compound the feelings of isolation felt by many intersex people.
6Health and Wellness
This chapter looks at historic and current health and wellness, including medical intervention, mental health, sexual and reproductive health and intersex inclusive healthcare.
7Relationships
Intersex is not an identity or a sexual orientation but rather a biological aspect of a person’s being. Intersex people, like all individuals, can have diverse sexual orientations. Their intersex status does not determine their orientation, and intersex people may identify as male, female or non-binary.
This section looks at the relationships intersex people may have and challenges misunderstanding and stigma.
You’ll also learn about disclosure and medical and sexual considerations.
8How to be an Ally
Being an ally means supporting and advocating for the rights and well-being of marginalised groups, even if you are not a part of those groups yourself.
This in depth section explains the importance of allyship and is full of tips and advice on being an ally to intersex individuals.

LGBTQIA+ Intersex Awareness
Upon successful completion, a certificate of achievement is available and or automatically added to a learner’s digital record.
Digital certificate(s) – print, download, store
A certificate includes the learner’s name, course title, completion score / result, completion date and any marks of approval, accreditation authorities, and or distribution partners. It can be downloaded, stored or printed.
Digital learning records
When using our platform Activbase, learning records are available 24/7 for review, tracking progress and access to certificates. Records contain details of sessions including progress, attempts and results. This and additional data such as associated CPD, standards and qualifications are logged and available for information insights and management reporting – a powerful resource for tracking compliance as well as monitoring learning pathways.

Records and certificates - Is the course accredited? What if i fail? Can I download my certificate?
Q: Is the course accredited?
Most of our courses are accredited by relevant authorities / approval bodies applicable to the course such as CPD, RoSPA or IIRSM. Please don’t hesitate to ask if you have any specific standard / approval requirements.
Q: Will I get a certificate?
All courses come with a certificate of achievement in recognition of completing the course successfully. A digital record is stored with each learner’s history and certificates are available for access and download.
Q: What if I fail my course?
If you do not achieve the pass rate for the course then you will be given the opportunity to review the training content and attempt the assessment again. With some of the video based courses, the course may be locked on a third failed attempt, subject to a review by your organisation administrator of a member of the RealSense support team.
