About the Children and Young People’s Mental Health Online Training Course
The course starts by defining mental illness and mental health problems and their impact on children and young people. There’s extensive coverage of the many types of mental illnesses found in this group, and how they can be recognised and treated.
You’ll learn about Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Depression and Self-Harm, and Eating Disorders (including Anorexia, Bulimia and Binge Eating).
Other mental illnesses covered in this training course include Schizophrenia, Autism, Learning Difficulties, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Panic Disorder, Sleep Apnoea and Social Phobia. For each condition, you’ll learn about symptoms and causes – and the actions to take if you suspect a child or young person has a mental health condition.
We’ll deal with prognosis and prevention – and show how to promote positive mental health and dispel common myths. Finally, you’ll learn practical techniques to help you talk to children or young people about their
mental health.

1Introduction
The course opens by defining mental health and exploring what is meant by mental ill health. It also explains the subtle differences between mental health problems and mental illness.
You’ll be introduced to the impact of mental disorders in children and young people, their prevalence and the mental health continuum.
2Mental Illnesses in Children and Young Adults: Part 1
This chapter begins with an in-depth look of the most common mental illnesses found in children and young adults.
Starting with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), you’ll hear about the prevalence of the condition, how it can be recognised and how it may affect children in schools. The differences between how the condition presents in girls and boys are explained, and information about the signs and symptoms you may witness is given.
Generalised Anxiety Disorder is explained next, and you’ll hear about how to support a child who has this disorder. You’ll learn about the different physical and emotional symptoms that may present, and the ways the condition can impact a child. The different types of anxiety disorder are explained along with the treatments that can help improve the condition.
This section concludes with an explanation of Depression and how and why it may affect children and young people. The differences between Major Depression and Dysthymia are explained, and the symptoms a child or young person may display are explored.
3Mental Illnesses in Children and Young Adults: Part 2
In this next chapter, you’ll continue to learn about the common mental illnesses affecting children and young people.
Self-Harm is explained and you’ll find out about why children may self-harm, and the other conditions they may have alongside self-harming.
Eating Disorders are summarised, and you’ll learn about the 3 main types of eating disorder – Anorexia, Bulimia and Binge Eating. You’ll explore when and why each type of eating disorder may start, and the symptoms each condition may include.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is explained next and you’ll hear explanations about how it can vary in severity, the characteristics of an autistic child, and the autistic symptoms that you may see when working with children.
4Mental Illnesses in Children and Young Adults: Part 3
As you continue to learn about the common mental illnesses found in children and young adults, you’ll hear about learning disabilities and how children with these conditions may also suffer from mental health issues.
Schizophrenia is covered next, with the common signs and symptoms explained, and the differences between the condition in children and adults examined.
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is summarised, and you’ll find out about possible causes of this condition and coping strategies.
An exploration of Bipolar Disorder comes next in this chapter, and the course will explain the signs and symptoms a child may display during manic and depressive episodes.
To conclude this section, you’ll hear a summary of other mental illnesses found in children and young adults including panic disorder, social phobia, PANs, and PANDAs.
5Signs of Mental Illnesses in Children and Young People
This module looks at a variety of topics, including a wide range of symptoms that might make you suspect a child or young person could have a form of mental illness.
The possible causes and risk factors of mental illness in children and young people are covered in this chapter, as well as the steps you can take if you suspect someone has a mental illness.
6Diagnoses and Treatment
Here, you’ll hear about the diagnosis and treatment of mental health problems in children and young people, and the evaluations and observations that may be carried out by specialists when making a diagnosis.
Next, you’ll learn about the common treatment options and their benefits including psychotherapy, mindfulness, play therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), different types of Medication, diet, and the role of the parents.
7Prognoses and Outcomes
In this chapter, you’ll learn about the short and long term prognosis for children and young adults with mental illnesses.
Protective factors are explained, and you’ll hear about how a child’s environment can impact their condition, as well as exploring the possible barriers to treatment.
The chapter concludes with looking at how positive mental health in children and young adults can be promoted, and dispels some of the common myths surrounding mental illness.

This final chapter sets out guidelines and tips to help you talk to a child or young person about their mental health.
You’ll hear about the steps you should take if you suspect a child or young person has a mental health condition, and gain some useful communication guidelines you could follow.
To conclude, you’ll be given important information and useful tips about talking to children about their mental health or other sensitive topics, preparing for conversations, and how to address and reflect upon what was said.

Q: Will I get a certificate?
All courses come with a certificate of achievement in recognition of completing the course successfully. A digital record is stored with each learner’s history and certificates are available for access and download.
Q: What if I fail my course?
If you do not achieve the pass rate for the course then you will be given the opportunity to review the training content and attempt the assessment again. With some of the video based courses, the course may be locked on a third failed attempt, subject to a review by your organisation administrator of a member of the RealSense support team.
